Review: Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

I dearly love this movie. It was made at the perfect time… long enough after the rise of horror flicks to be completely self-aware, yet not so long that it is just a cynical roast of the genre.  There is a strong sense of fun throughout the movie — you just know it was fun to write and fun to make. Whether purposeful or not, the actors are all perfectly balanced between actual acting and hamming it up, particularly the delightful John Vernon.

After a great start, the movie starts dragging a little in the middle and never fully recovers. Still, the costumes, movies and klown weapons are all silly and amusing enough to carry your interest to the end. It must have been a great move to watch while stoned in 1988.

Directed by Steven Chiodo, starring no one in particular.
